The defendants were charged with trafficking and smuggling more than 5,000 cakes of heroin and thousands of drug tablets from Laos to Viet Nam and China.
They were also prosecuted for falsifying materials, illegally stockpiling weapons, and giving bribe.
This is the biggest ever transnational drug trafficking case uncovered in Viet Nam.
According to Vietnam's law, those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the highest penalty of death.
