The opening ceremony of the 24th ASEAN Summit

Under theme “Moving Forward in Unity to a Peaceful and Prosperous Community,” the summit will discuss on the implementation of the ASEN Community Roadmap until late 2015, post-2015 development vision and its diplomatic relations.

PM Nguyen Tan Dung and other ASEAN leaders will talk both regional and international issues of common concern, including the current situation in the East Sea.

Earlier, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM), the 11th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting and the 14th Meeting of the ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC) took place on May 10 in Myanmar. Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh led the Vietnamese delegation to join these meetings.

At the AMM, ASEAN Foreign Ministers voiced their serious concern over the complicated developments in the East Sea.

They agreed to pass a statement on the current complicated developments in the East Sea.

The statement urged all parties concerned to comply with the universally recognized principles of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), exercise self-restraint and avoid actions which could undermine peace and stability in the region, and resolve disputes by peaceful means without using or threatening the use of force.

The document also emphasizes the importance of maintaining peace and stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation in and over-flight above the East Sea as well as the ASEAN’s Six-Point Principles on the East Sea and the Joint Statement of the 15th ASEAN-China Summit on the 10th anniversary of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea.

ASEAN Foreign Ministers called on all parties to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) to undertake full and effective implementation of the DOC in order to create an environment of mutual trust and confidence. They emphasized the need for an early conclusion of the Code of Conduct in the East (COC).

This is the first time after nearly two decades, ASEAN released a statement on the complicated situation which undermines peace, security and freedom of navigation in the East Sea./.
