Aquaculture processing development planned

VGP – Việt Nam targets to export 2 million tons of aquatic products by 2020, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

October 06, 2011 5:16 PM GMT+7

It also plans to consume 950,000 tons of aquatic products locally by the said year.

Those are part of the newly-approved aquaculture processing development plan.

The sector will strive for an export growth rate of 3.5%, export turnover of US $10 billion, and total industrial processing output of 2.13 million tons per year.

Four aquatic processing areas will be formed to make the best use of each area’s advantages in terms of material supply, infrastructure as well as natural resources.

The northern city of Hải Pòng will be an aquatic product processing area in the Red River Delta.

The central city of Đà Nẵng and central province of Khánh Hòa were planned to become two aquatic product processing areas in the North Central Region and the North Central Coast.

Hồ Chí Minh City and Bà Rịa-Vũng will be converted into the central area of the South East Region.

The last area will be built in the Mekong Delta’s city of Cần Thơ to connect with other processing satellite centers like the one on seafood in Kiên Giang; the one on tra catfish (pangasius) in An Giang, Đồng Tháp, Vĩnh Long, Cần Thơ; and the one on shrimp in Cà Mau, Sóc Trăng, Bạc Liêu and Bến Tre.

In the plan, the MARD also defines specific measures for consumption markets.

Regarding export markets, the MARD will develop key markets by building trademarks for key export products like sugpo prawn and tra catfish and export directly to overseas distribution systems and supermarket chains.

The MARD will focus on strengthening the consumption power of the domestic market by re-organizing the distribution system in urban centers and industrial parks./.
