Bac Lieu urged to accelerate economic structure transformation

VGP – PM Nguyen Tan Dung urged the Southern province of Bac Lieu to focus on transforming its economic structure and reducing the current poverty rate of 9% during his working session with leaders of the local authorities on Saturday morning.

The province needs to attach importance to education and vocational training as it plays a decisive role in building foundations for the locality’s development.

The Government chief also asked Bac Lieu to beef up progress of key infrastructure projects, especially wind power ones in order to create premises for development in other sectors and new jobs as well.

Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Vo Van Dung said his province’s economy expanded 11.3% in the first quarter of 2014. Agriculture accounts for nearly 50% of Bac Lieu’s GDP while industry-construction and service sector make up only 24.5% and 25.7%, respectively.

Earlier on April 25, PM Nguyen Tan Dung visited a wind power project in Vinh Trach Dong commune, Bac Lieu city. This is one of the first wind power projects in Viet Nam.

The first ten turbines of this project have generated over 20,000 MW for the national grid so far though they are not operating at their full designed capacity.

The installation of an additional 52 turbines in the project’s second phase with a total investment of US $197 million is being sped up. These facilities are expected to be put into operation by the end of next year.

One competed, the project is expected to contribute 320 million kWh to the national grid every year./.
