Biggest wind power plant ground-broken in Bac Lieu

VGP - Hoa Binh 5 wind power plant with a total designed capacity of 80 MW was ground-broken on October 11 in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu, becoming the biggest of its kind in Viet Nam’s mainland.

October 13, 2020 10:39 AM GMT+7

The first phase of the project, which has a total investment of VND3.2 trillion (US$138 million), is designed to have 26 wind turbines with a capacity of 3.0 – 4.2 MW each.

Once coming into operation in October 2021, the project will be connected with the national power grid on the 220kV Gia Rai – Bac Lieu 2 transmission line, generating over 280 million kWh of electricity annually, thus contributing over VND80 billion to the State budget.

Especially, the plant will be integrated with aquaculture production to optimize land use effectiveness.

Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Duong ThanhTrung was quoted as saying that since 2010, Bac Lieu has been developing ten wind power projects, including one completed and nine under construction, with total capacity of more than 660 MW and combined investment of over US$1 billion.

The province will invest US$ 4 billion in a liquefied natural gas-fired power plant with a capacity of 3200 MW. The project is expected to start in Q2, 2021.

These projects are suitable with the local potentials and the PM’s direction on green development in four pillars of agriculture with high-quality rice, aquaculture processing and production with the focus of shrimps, development of renewable energy, and tourism.

Viet Nam plans to ramp up its solar and wind power generation capacity, aiming to raise the proportion of renewables in its power mix to 15%-20% by 2030 and to 25%-30% by 2045, from 10%.

Wind power generation capacity is targeted to increase from 429 MW to 800 MW by end-2020 and 2,000 MW by 2025.

2020 marks a major turning point in the energy industry of Viet Nam, with clean energy strengthening its solid position and establishing itself as a profitable sector with significant potential for development, according to Viet Nam Energy Update Report 2020 released by the Centre of Media and Development Initiatives (MDI) under the Viet Nam Union of Science and Technology Associations./.
