The central region has experienced a total rainfall of nearly 3,000 mm since early October, causing widespread flooding and affecting more than 135,000 in 200 communes and wards of Thua Thien Hue-Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Quang Nam and Da Nang.

As of October 18, floods left 122 people dead and missing, destroyed nearly 600 houses, and submerged tens of thousands of hectares of crops.

Particularly, a landslide in Rao Trang 3 hydropower plant construction site in Xuan Phong Commune, Phong Dien District, Thua Thien-Hue Province buried 17 workers and 13 members of a rescue team who lost their lives when they were on way to the construction site to search for the workers.

One day later, a landslide hit barracks of unit of the Military Region 4, killing 22 officers and soldiers in Quang Tri Province.

Earlier on October 17, a nationwide campaign was launched to raise funds for the poor and flood victims in the central region, live broadcast from Ha Noi with the attendance of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

Addressing the event, Prime Minister Phuc called on organizations, individuals and businesses to continue providing support for people affected by national disasters in the central region.

The mission of sustainable reduction of poverty and ensuring social security is getting more difficult every day, especially when our economy is suffering from a pandemic and natural disasters, Phuc stressed.

He went on to say that working together for the poor to leave no one behind should not be just an empty slogan, thus the whole country should act on it with sympathy, love, and follow hearts./.
