The Government chief made the call yesterday during a meeting with the leaders of the local authorities.

PM Dung recommended Can Tho city develop the processing industry and technology applications.

“Can Tho city should take more drastic measures to combine the building of new-style rural areas with poverty reduction and vocational training in order to improve the living conditions of rural residents,” said the Government leader.

During the working session, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said that as a hub of the Mekong Delta region, the city needs to proactively put forth its own policies and methods to reach greater development in health, science-technology, education and training.

Deputy PM Dam spoke highly of the city’s proposal to pilot the application of power-point lectures, which will reduce the shortcomings of current textbooks. There are now 16 localities registering to apply this model at their schools, he added.

In the first quarter of 2014, Can Tho city posted a GDP growth of 8.32% compared to the preset target of 12-12.5% this year./.
