VGP - Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong on April 16 in Ha Noi met with Chinese Ambassador to Viet Nam Xiong Bo to discuss measures to boost agricultural cooperation and trade in agricultural products between the two countries amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

China, VN bolster agricultural trade despite epidemic

The main topics of discussion were opening up more markets for agro-forestry-fishery products and boosting cross-border trade.

One suggestion was to compile a list of exporters who would be exempted from inspections in order to reduce the time it takes for their products to pass through the border gate.

Regarding the congestion of goods at border gates, the Ambassador said that China has also paid much attention to this issue and believed that it is only a temporary problem and the two sides will make all efforts necessary to overcome these tough times.

He noted that the Chinese customs have taken many measures to shorten clearance times and he also proposed a number of measures for Viet Nam to improve its clearance capacity.

Minister Cuong expressed his wish that the Ambassador will actively support Viet Nam in dealing with the requirements from China as soon as possible so that more Vietnamese agricultural products will be allowed to enter the Chinese market.

The Chinese Ambassador said that Viet Nam is the largest and most important trade partner of China in ASEAN, accounting for 25% of China’s trade with ASEAN countries.

The two sides agreed that a number of goods from designated firms will be allowed to pass border control without quarantine.

The two countries will also look to coordinate a "priority flow" through customs. Agricultural products will be able to cross the border in either direction via the Kim Thanh International Border Gate in Lao Cai province during new extended hours from 7am to 10 pm.
