Deputy PM Phạm Gia Khiêm ends his successful visit to US

VNGOVNet – Deputy PM, Foreign Minister Phạm Gia Khiêm had the last working day on March 16 (Washington time-zone) in his official visit to the United States.

Deputy PM Phạm Gia Khiêm met with various senior US government officials, including National Security Advisor Stephen J. Hadley, US Trade Representative Susan Schwab, Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez, acting Defense Secretary Gordon England, and leaders of the US Export-Import Bank (Exim Bank). He also had meetings with Senator Max Baucus, Chairman of the US Senate Committee on Finance. The Vietnamese Deputy PM and leaders of some US economic bodies discussed about solutions to speed up investment and trade activities between the two countries in the coming time as well as the plan to negotiate the Framework Agreement on Trade and Investment. Deputy PM Phạm Gia Khiêm re-emphasized the Vietnamese Government’s special concerns about the US’s monitoring mechanism of textiles and garments, which will cause negative impacts on Vietnamese exports. He suggested the two sides to discuss more to deal with this issue. American economic officials affirmed that the US wants to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam to develop the bilateral eocnomic-trade ties to a new height, corresponding to the two countries’ potentialities. They showed their understanding of Vietnam’s concerns and pledged to closely coordinate with the Vietnamese partners to settle the issue relating to Vietnam’s textiles and garments.

The Deputy PM had dialogue with a number of representatives of the US business community in a meeting organized by the US-ASEAN Business Council. He also witnessed the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Vietnam Ministry of Post and Telematics and the Microsoft Groups on copyright for office software. He paid a visit to the headquarters of the Washington Post Newspaper and met Vietnamese people who are residing in the US.

In his meeting with Acting Defense Secretary Gordon England, Deputy PM Phạm Gia Khiêm stressed the importance of settlement of war consequences and confidence construction. Vietnam will continue to help the US in dealing with MIA-related issues, he confirmed. He also aksed the US Government to provide information about Vietnamese MIAs. The US Acting Defense Secretary expressed his gratitude to the Vietnamese Government for effective cooperation in handling MIA-related issues and highly appreciated the need to solidify mutual confidence and implement the exisiting cooperative projects, such as mine clearing.

The meeting between the Vietnamese Deputy PM and the US National Security Advisor focused on the preparatory work for the coming official visit to the US by Vietnamese State President Nguyễn Minh Triết. The two sides also discussed on bilateral issues, regional and international situations, and some cooperation fields.
