Dwellers in five disadvantaged provinces to benefit Denmark-funded program

VNGOP – Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Đức Phát and Danish Ambassador to Việt Nam Peter Lysholt Hansen this afternoon, December 11, signed the Agreement "Supporting the agricultural and rural development program 2007-2012" financed by Denmark.

December 11, 2007 7:04 PM GMT+7

The Program aims at poverty reduction and improving the living standards for the country folk, especially the poor in mountainous and ethnic minority areas and female bread-winners.

Minister Cao Đức Phát said that the Program will focus on the country’s five most disadvantaged provinces: Lai Châu, Lào Cai, Điện Biên, Đắk Lắk and Đắk Nông.

Sustainable agriculture, increasing ethnic minorities’ accessibility to market, developing women’s handicrafts, processing agro-products, improving awareness of environment, and strengthening grassroots democracy are major topics of the Programs.

Denmark pledged to give a total fund of DKK 230 million (equivalent to US $43 million) for five years.
