VGP – Vietnamese economy expanded 2.62% in the 3rd quarter this year, the General Statistics Office (GSO) reported Tuesday.

With this positive figure, the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 2.12% in the first nine months this year.

Amid the swift evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world, the GDP growth rate is still a big success as the country is pursuing the dual goal of containing the pandemic and restarting economic recovery, stressed GSO Director General Nguyen Thi Huong.

In Jan-Sept period, the agro-forestry-fishery sector increased 1.84%, industry-construction 3.08%, and services 1.37%. They respectively contributed 13.62%, 58.35%, and 28.03% to the overall growth.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has been brought under control, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh had approved the Ministry of Transport’s proposal on resuming international commercial flights to six destinations in a bid to boost economic recovery.

On September 19, a Ha Noi-Tokyo flight carrying nearly 60 passengers took off at Noi Bai International Airport, making it the first international commercial flight after six months of suspension due to COVID-19.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc tasked the Ministry of Transport to continue proposing to increase frequency of international commercial flights to bring back foreign experts, investors and Vietnamese.

The Government has also focused on accelerating disbursement of public investment capital, particularly for key transport projects, including the Eastern North-South Expressway.

Construction is scheduled to officially begin on three sections of the Eastern North-South Expressway on September 30. The sections are Mai Son-National Highway 45, Vinh Hao-Phan Thiet, and Phan Thiet-Dau Giay.

Due to negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Assembly had approved the Government’s proposal to change investment form of the three sub-projects from public-private partnership to public investment to ensure the progress of this project./.
