Eight southern provinces heavily damaged by Typhoon No. 9
VNGOVNet – In the afternoon of December 5 in Hanoi, Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng, Head of the Central Committee for Storm and Flood Prevention, presided over a meeting to deal with Typhoon No. 9 (also known as Durian). He requested all sectors at various echelons to overcome the typhoon’s impacts by promptly carrying out the relief work, treating the injured and ensuring enough food for the people.

As of 3 PM December 5, over 57 people were reported killed and missing. Nearly 600 were wounded. 18,452 houses collapsed. 858 ships and boats sunk. The material damage is estimated at VND50 billion. The eight provinces heavily hit by Typhoon Durian include Khánh Hòa, Bình Thuận, Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu, Hồ Chí Minh City (Cần Giờ District), Tiền Giang, Bến Tre, Vĩnh Long, and Cần Thơ.
Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng ordered the relevant ministries and sectors to continue the preventive work and promptly conduct the relief activities. He also signed a decision to release 200 tons of rice for victims in Phú Quý Island. He required the sectors of Electricity, Telecommunication, and Transport to as soon as possible deal with the typhoon’s impacts in order to bring the people’s daily-life and production activities back to normal.
Up to the afternoon of December 5, the working teams headed by Deputy PM Trương Vĩnh Trọng, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Đức Phát and Deputy Minister of Agriculture Nguyễn Văn Thắng had arrived in Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu, Cà Mau-Bạc Liêu, and Rạch Giá respectively to direct the relief work in the wake of the typhoon.
