Environmental impacts of Xayaburi need further research

VGP – Viet Nam hopes that Laos will continue research on the environmental impacts of the Xayaburi dam and perfect the design of the dam, Spokesman of the Foreign Ministry Luong Thanh Nghi said Thursday.

November 08, 2012 6:09 PM GMT+7

Mr. Nghi made the statement while answering correspondents’ question on Viet Nam’s response to Laos’ resumption of the construction of the Xayaburi dam after the country has adjusted its design to mitigate the adverse effects on the lower Mekong River.

He said that Laos should cooperate with Viet Nam, Cambodia and Thailand in studying cumulative impacts caused by possible future hydro power plants on the Mekong River on the environment, economics and society in a comprehensive and thorough manner.

The equal and proper exploitation and use of natural resources, especially Mekong River water is of significant importance to ensure sustainable development and interests of all the Mekong countries, the Spokesman stressed.
