FAO hails VN’s efforts in fulfilling MDG

VGP – Việt Nam is the only ASEAN country successfully realizing the UN Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of poverty reduction in the 2003-05 period, says the report “The state of food security in the world 2008” by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

According to the report, thanks to the increasing quantity of small-scale rice production over the last time, Việt Nam has become one of key rice exporters in the world.

However, the report also uncovered that there remain around 923 million people in hunger, an increase of 80 million ones against the period of 1990-92. The problem stemmed from high food prices.

FAO urged developing nations to adopt proper measures to help their agricultural sector adapt to price increase as well as carry out programs on food security and social assistance for most vulnerable groups.
