FAO’s ministerial meeting opens in HN

VGP - The Ministerial Meeting of the 31st UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific took place on March 15 in Hà Nội.

March 15, 2012 6:55 PM GMT+7

The event drew the participation of FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and agriculture ministers, senior officials from 40 countries in the region.

FAO appreciated the agricultural achievements in Việt Nam, which is one of a few countries to be able to raise productivity and ensure national food security, said FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva at a press briefing held after the meeting closed.

Mr. Da Silva announced that the participation of 12 out of 14 island countries in the world in the meeting reflects these countries’ clear awareness of food security, poverty reduction and impacts of climate change and sea level rise.

FAO would help to develop the Asian-Pacific agricultural system in a sustainable manner via green and safe growth, Mr. Da Silva said.

The FAO Director-General promised to assist the host country in ensuring food security, building new rural areas and developing the fishery sector.

In addition, FAO would learn experience from Việt Nam to share with other countries, Mr. Da Silva added.

Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Đức Phát highly spoke of FAO’s fruitful assistance for Việt Nam.

According to Minister Phát, FAO has proposed a new approach of poverty reduction by utilizing available instruments, methods and technologies to raise productivity and quality of food instead of pouring massive investment in developing new technologies./.
