Foreign arrivals to VN surge nearly 35% in January

This marked the highest figure so far due to high travel demand during the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.

Specifically, the Southeast Asian country welcomed around 1.99 million international travelers including overseas Vietnamese, up 16.6% over the previous month and 32.8% compared to the same period of last year.

Of the total figure, those going by air travel increased by 38.9%, while arrivals by sea rose by 231.5%.

During this period, Asian visitors to Viet Nam accounted for 77.4%, up 39.9% over the same period in 2019.

China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Taiwan (China), Malaysia, Thailand were the largest tourist source markets of Viet Nam. The number of Hong Kong visitors to Viet Nam was reported to decrease by 76.2%.

European and American travelers to the S-shaped country respectively increased by 11.5% and by 19% over the same period of last year, the GSO said.

They added that in the last days of January, many Vietnamese travel agencies attended the International Tourism Fair (FITUR 2020) in Spain.

According to experts, the number of foreign visitors to Viet Nam will decrease due to the outbreak of coronavirus epidemic.

Temporary suspension of tours to/from Coronavirus-inflicted areas will greatly affect the tourism growth of international travel agencies in particular and the results of the tourism industry in general in the next months./.
