The project will be conducted in 13 communes of three districts of Bố Trạch, Minh Hóa and Quảng Ninh from 2008 to 2015 with a view to supporting management, protection and exploitation of the values of the Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park.

The project is a good condition to develop ecotourism in order to profit the National Park and local population; prioritize the effective management of forests; and build up close coordination among forest-protecting forces, such as rangers, the park’s staff, hamlet authorities and the local people.

Especially, the project gives priorities to such activities aimed at raising income and creating jobs for 56,000 residents in the 13 communes, supporting the economic development in the buffer zone corresponding to the disciplines of biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources.

The Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park was recognized by UNESCO as the World Natural Heritage Site for its geological and geomorphologic features. The site can obtain the title again for its biodiversity this year.

At least, 2,394 species of vascular plant, including many rare and specious ones listed in Việt Nam’s Red Book, such as burretiodendron hsienmu, parashorea, carya sinensis dode, platanaceae, cupressaceae, dyospyros SP, eucommia ulmoides and orchids, were founded here.

The park is also the habitat of 1,072 animals, with 140 species of big animals (36 species in Việt Nam’s Red Book and 23 ones in the list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature - IUCN), 356 bird species, 162 fish species, 97 reptile species, 47 amphibian species (18 in Việt Nam’s Red Book and six in IUCN list), 270 butterfly species and 50 species of aquatic animal.
