Guidelines on sending gold into VN

VGP – Under Vietnamese laws, Vietnamese and foreign individuals cannot send gold abroad and receive gold from abroad as gifts or presents by post, air or sea.

Question (an overseas Vietnamese living the Federal Republic of Germany): I want to present my younger sister in Việt Nam with a gold bar. Can I send gold to Việt Nam by post? How much can I send? What is the import tax rate?

Answer (Lawyer NHQuang’s Office, B23 Trung Hòa–Nhân Chính Villa Complex, Thanh Xuân District, Hà Nội)

According to Item 2, Article 1 of Decision 1165/2001/QĐ-NHNN dated September 12, 2001, both Vietnamese and foreign individuals are not allowed to send gold abroad nor receive gold sent from abroad in the form of gifts or presents by post, air or sea.

In addition, under Item 1, Article 1 of the same Decision, Vietnamese and foreign individuals are allowed to bring gold with them when leaving or entering Việt Nam through the Vietnamese border gates.

The allowable quantity of gold brought into Việt Nam is one kilogram of international standard gold, and customs declaration is required.

Under Decision 29/2008/QĐ-BTC dated May 19, 2008 of the Ministry of Finance, all kinds of gold are imposed the import tax rate of 1%.
