H5N1 vaccine for humans to come out in 2013

VGP – Việt Nam is to churn out its first A/H5N1 avian influenza vaccine in 2013, according to Director National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology Prof Nguyễn Trần Hiển.

February 15, 2012 8:38 PM GMT+7

According to Prof Hiển, the testing of Vietnamese-made H5N1 avian influenza vaccine on humans in Việt Nam has entered the third phase.

Once this final phase is completed, which is expected by late 2012, the outcomes of the vaccine will be submitted the Ministry of Public Health for mass-production.

According to data published by the National Institute, between 2007 and 2010, Việt Nam  reported five to seven A/H5N1 cases in humans a year. The majority of infectious victims had contacted directly or eaten A/H5N1-infected poultry. So far, the evidence of the disease spreading from humans to humans has yet been confirmed.

Bird flu has spread further in five Vietnamese localities including Thanh Hóa, Quảng Trị, Sóc Trăng, Hà Nam and Hải Dương provinces./.
