HCMC has new People’s Committee Chairman

VGP – The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council elected Phan Van Mai as new Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee on Tuesday.

Permanent Deputy Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City’s Party Committee Phan Van Mai has been named Chairman of the city’s People’s Committee for the 2021-2026 period. Photo: VGP 

Phan, a member of the Party Central Committee and permanent Deputy Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City’s Party Committee, replaces his predecessor Nguyen Thanh Phong who had been assigned by the Politburo as Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee's Economic Commission.

In his inaugural remarks at the Council, Phan pledged to focus on the immediate tasks of containing the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing COVID-19 death toll, providing support for pandemic-hit residents, particularly the poor and disadvantaged ones.

He committed to doing his utmost to foster socio-economic development and improve living quality in the city. 

Phan was born in 1973 in Ben Tre province’s Giong Trom district.

He holds Master's degree in business administration and bachelor’s degree in English and economics. 

From 2008-2011, he served as Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee.

From January 2012-March 2014, he was appointed as standing Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee and Chairman of the Viet Nam Youth Federation.

In 2014, he became Deputy Secretary of the Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Council.

At the 12th National Party Congress in January 2016, he was elected to the Party Central Committee. 

In January 2019, Phan was elected as Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People’s Committee.

From July 2019-October 2020, he served as Secretary of Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee for the 2020-2025 period. 

In January 2021, he was re-elected as member of the Party Central Committee at the 13th National Party Congress. 

On January 6, 2021, the Politburo assigned Phan as permanent Deputy Secretary of HCMC’s Party Committee.  

In June 2021, he was elected as National Assembly deputy for the 2021-2026 period.
