HCMC supports 2.5 million difficulty-struck people amidst pandemic time

VGP – The local authorities of HCM City will support 2.5 million people coping with difficulties posed by COVID-19 with VND 1 million (US$ 43.6) and 10 kilograms of rice each, according to Director of the Department of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs Le Minh Tan.

These people are requested to stay at home and cash support will be brought directly to them.

The move came after the Standing Board of the HCM City Party Committee August 15 asked authorities of Thu Duc city and all districts to quickly provide support, including cash and free food, to needy people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, the local authorities are delivering 1 million welfare packages consisting of food, foodstuff, and essential commodities for disadvantaged people.

Earlier, the HCMC People’s Committee passed a local budget of VDN 1,092 billion (US$ 47 million) for disease prevention and subsidies for disadvantaged people.

Ho Chi Minh City launched  a drive on "Promoting the strength of the entire population to participate in the prevention and control of COVID-19" and the City's Social Welfare Center, which aims to focus on sharing and supporting people severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially lottery ticket sellers, motorbike taxi drivers, and street vendors.

Previously, from August 5 - 10, the City Fatherland Front also deployed the second social welfare package with more than VND900 billion disbursed, to provide timely support for disadvantaged people during social distancing.

The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City proposed the Government provide the city with nearly VND 28 trillion (US$ 1.2 billion) and 142,000 tonnes of rice to assist poor people and labourers during the period of social distancing under the Prime Minister’s Directive No. 16.

In particular, the pandemic has seriously affected the lives of people and poor labourers, forcing many of them to leave the city to other provinces and cities or return to their hometowns. It is estimated that the city has over 1.58 million poor households facing difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

HCM City is the centre of the fourth wave of COVID-19 infections with the number of patients and deaths increasing rapidly. The metropolis recorded nearly 149,300 COVID-19 cases since the end of April. The city has extended its social distancing order to September 15, after already completing 70 days.
