Ha Long Bay named one of most popular attractions in Asia

The newspaper said the UNESCO World Heritage site in the northern province of Quang Ninh came in fifth among the top 10 most popular Asian gems, which was topped by the Great Wall of China.

Mount Fuji in Japan came in second on the top 10 list, followed by China’s Forbidden City and India’s Taj Mahal. The rest were Mount Everest in Nepal and Tibet; Angkor Wat in Cambodia; Komodo Island in Indonesia; The Grand Palace in Bangkok; and Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai.

“One of the most popular natural attractions in South East Asia, Ha Long Bay is home to 1,969 islets of hulking limestone and deep, green waters that are home to myriad floating villages," CNN said.

Cua Van floating fishing village in Ha Long Bay is one of the hidden gems in Viet Nam that has yet to be overrun by vacationers. It is home to more than 170 fishing families, the cable network added.

Ha Long Bay, situated around four hours to the west of Ha Noi by road, was recognized as world heritage site in 1994 by UNESCO. It was also voted among the world’s seven new natural wonders by Swiss organization New Open World in 2011”  it said.

Last year, around 5.2 million foreigners visited Ha Long Bay, up 22% from a year ago, accounting for 30% of the 15.6 million foreign tourist arrivals to the country .

The boom in foreign tourists in Ha Long Bay is attributed to major infrastructural improvements that have made it easier for foreigners to visit the world-famous bay, according to SCMP.
