Inland waterway infrastructure master plan during 2021-2030 approved

VGP - Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh signed a Decision approving the inland waterway infrastructure master plan in the 2021-2030 period, with vision to 2050.

November 04, 2021 1:24 PM GMT+7

Accordingly, by 2030, cargo transport volume will reach 715 million tons and 150 billion ton-kilometers while passenger transport volume will attain 397 million passengers and 7.7 billion passenger-kilometers.

Nine waterways will be advanced including:

- One coastal corridor from the northern province of Quang Ninh to the southern province of Kien Giang.

- Four corridors in the North (Quang Ninh-Hai Phong-Ha Noi, Quang Ninh-Hai Phong-Ninh Binh, Ha Noi-Nam Dinh-Ninh Binh and Ha Noi-Viet Tri-Lao Cai).

- Four corridors in the South (Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho-Ca Mau, Ho Chi Minh City-An Giang-Kien Giang, Ba Ria-Vung Tau-Tay Ninh-Ho Chi Minh City and a waterway connecting with Cambodia via Tien and Hau rivers).

The plan targets to upgrade 55 key waterways on 140 rivers with the length of 7,300 kilometers and 54 cargo port clusters with the capacity of 361 million tons.

Meanwhile, 39 passenger port clusters with the capacity of 53.4 million passengers will be improved.

With a coastline stretching over 3,000 kilometers, Viet Nam has a maritime and inland waterway transport system that plays an important role in the country. Every year, the seaport system handles up to 90 percent of import and export cargo, contributing significantly to economic growth./.
