Int’l foreign tourist arrivals to VN down 37.8% in first four months

VGP - The number of foreign tourist arrivals to Viet Nam in the first four months of this year reached 3.7 million due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a year-on-year decline of 37.8%, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

In the first four months, visitors from Europe fell 25.4% year-on-year, of which arrivals from Russia were down 10.3%, from the UK 34.3%, from France 37.6%, and from Germany 35.8%.

The number of arrivals from the Americas was down 37.6% year-on-year.

In addition, visitors from Asia accounted for 72.7% of the total, down 40.3% year-on-year, with the sharpest decline of 47.7% seen in the number of tourists from China.

The number of tourists from Cambodia and Laos, however, increased 157.2% and 7.9%, respectively.

Arrivals by air accounted for 80.7% of the total, down 35.9%, while those arriving by road fell 51.4%. Those coming via sea routes increased 20.7%.

Specifically, international visitors to Viet Nam in April this year were estimated at 26,200 arrivals, down 94.2% over the previous month, of which arrivals by air decreased 98.3%.

International visitors by land decreased by 70.1%, and by sea decreased by 99.5%. Compared to the same period last year, international visitors to the country in April decreased by 98.2%.

After applying social distancing measures, many domestic tourist destinations have now been re-opened to welcome guests and have introduced promotional programmes, especially on the occasion of Reunification Day on April 30 and International Labour Day on May 1.
