Japan helps improve climate change adaptability in Mekong Delta
VGP - The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) co-organized a conference on Monday to discuss ways to help Mekong Delta residents adapt to climate change.
The event, will focus on upgrading sea dykes, developing secure water sources, promoting aquaculture, and increasing the capacity and accuracy of weather forecasts and early warning systems.
According to the Southern Institute for Water Resources Planning (SIWRP), the Mekong Delta is particularly vulnerable to the climate change and rising seawater levels caused by global warming. It is estimated that local farmers may lose 10% of their crops by 2030, and 15% by 2050.
Since summer 2011, JICA has helped the institute carry out a study to evaluate the potential impact caused by climate change and proposing climate change adaptation solutions for seven coastal provinces in the Me Kong Delta.
The project will be implemented in Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and Kien Giang provinces to benefit 9.07 million people, making up half the total population in the Delta./.
