MRC Conference opens in Hanoi

VNGOP – Members of the Mekong River Commission (MRC), donors and partners met and shared opinions for the first time in the April 24 morning in Hanoi at the International Conference on the Mekong River Commission.

The Conference drew the participation of over 100 delegates from MRC member countries, donors, and international organizations.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng confirmed Vietnam's determination and full cooperation with other MRC members in realizing the 1995 Agreement on Cooperation for Sustainable Development in the Mekong River Basin as well as the MRC's programs in order to ensure that more than 60 million people along the Mekong basin live in prosperity and a sustainable environment.

The Deputy PM asked the member countries to fulfill commitments and cooperate with the upstream countries in using water resources in the Mekong River basin in a sustainable way. He also called for the international community to further support the MRC's operation.

In the afternoon of the same day, the representative of the Swedish Government and the executive director of the MRC Secretariat signed an agreement under which the Sweden will grant US$ 6.4 million for environmental, aquaculture and planning activities in the Mekong River basin.
