VGP – At the end of next year, the National Program for Clean Water and Sanitation in Rural Areas strives to help 79% of rural people access to clean water. Around 40% of them can use clean water commensurate with the Minister of Health-set standards and 65% of households have toilet sanitation.

As proved by data recently given by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), as of late 2008, around 75% of rural people in Việt Nam are able to access to clean water and 60% of them acquire toilet sanitation.

Through the National Program, clean water works and toilet sanitation have been built for 884 schools, 400 clinics, 80 offices of communal-level people’s committees and 90 markets in the rural areas.

MARD announced that, apart from other projects financed by UNICEF, JICA, and WB, the National Program has been sponsored by Denmark, Australia and the Netherlands.

As a result, since 2007, the construction of clean water and sanitation system and the management water resources in Việt Nam have been poured with US $120 million and US $5 million respectively for five years.

Between 2007 and 2008, Việt Nam and the three sponsors have launched a US $23-million pilot program in nine provinces, namely Lai Châu, Điện Biên, Lào Cai, Phú Yên, Ninh Thuận, Đắk Lắk, Đắk Nông, An Giang and Trà Vinh.

The two sides agreed to expand the project in 31 cities and provinces next year.
