Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc

The PM’s trip to attend the ASEAN Summit aims to contribute to further strengthening ASEAN solidarity, promoting the bloc’s central role, expanding and deepening ASEAN’s relations with partners, and creating a favorable environment for sustainable development of each country and the whole region.

The 35th ASEAN Summit and related summits will bring together leaders of 10 ASEAN member countries, ASEAN’s partners (China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Russia), and the UN Secretary General.

The conference will focus on discussing measures to accelerate the process of building the ASEAN Community and the effective implementation of master plans in line with the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, as well as the regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Leaders will also review the implementation results and talk measures to continue implementing the “ASEAN Leaders' Vision Statement on Partnership for Sustainability” (adopted at the 34th ASEAN Summit in early 2019), while discussing the realization of priorities for 2019 in the spirit of the theme “Strengthening partnership for sustainability”, and development orientations for ASEAN in the years ahead.

Since its official admission to ASEAN on July 28, 1995, Viet Nam has made significant contributions to the bloc’s development and maturity. Viet Nam has actively contributed to the process of expanding and completing the idea of ASEAN consisting of 10 countries in Southeast Asia.

Viet Nam has actively taken the lead in regional economic integration, and is one of the two countries with the highest implementation rate of commitments in the master plan on building the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) (with 95.5%).

In addition, the country has been actively engaged in accelerating the development and implementation of economic cooperation agreements inside the bloc as well as between ASEAN and its partners.

In turn, Viet Nam will assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020, a pivotal year in implementing plans to realize the ASEAN Vision 2025 and a year marking the 25th anniversary of Viet Nam’s accession to ASEAN.

After the closing ceremony of the 35th ASEAN Summit, the hand-over of the ASEAN Chairmanship from Thailand to Viet Nam will be held. Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc will deliver a speech introducing the topic and some major orientations of Viet Nam in the ASEAN Year 2020.

At the event, the logo of the ASEAN Year 2020 and a short video introducing Viet Nam’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2020 of will also be screened.
