National Assembly adopts Resolution on peacekeeping

VGP – The National Assembly adopted a Resolution regarding Viet Nam’s engagement in UN peacekeeping operations with 100% legislators voting in favor.

Viet Nam has sent 172 military officers and staff for UN peacekeeping missions since 2014.

The Resolution, scheduled to take effect since July 1, 2021, specifies principles, forms and areas of engagement, protocol for deployment of peacekeeping forces among other issues.

Since 2014, Viet Nam has sent 172 military officers and staff for UN peacekeeping missions in the Central Africa Republic and South Sudan, as also deputations to the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the UN headquarters, according to Minister of National Defense Ngo Xuan Lich.

Lich said the Ministry is preparing to send about 320 sappers under the Viet Nam People’s Army to UN peacekeeping operations.

The country has received more than US$4.8 million from the UN and more than US$20 million from the international community for the work, which has helped reduce state budget spending on these activities, he added.

The same day, the Legislature also passed revised laws, namely Law on Residency, Law on the Handling of Administrative Violations, Law on Vietnamese Guest Workers under Contract, and Law on International Agreements./.
