ORBIS’s representative handed the Yên Bái Social Disease Prevention Center, Yên Bái Hospital, Lục Yên Hospital and Nghĩa Lô Hospital a biomicroscope each. The Center was also granted with a Phaco machine.

Earlier, ORBIS Việt Nam had organized some training courses on eye surgical technique for doctors from those units.
The Phacoemulsification, known as phaco surgery, is a modern cataract surgery
causing little pain and shortening postoperative time.
ORBIS and The Yên Bái Health Department are fostering cooperative programs on initial eye care for local residents, especially in mountainous areas. They are also carrying blindness alleviation program in these localities.

ORBIS opened a permanent office in Việt Nam in 2003. In fiscal year 2006, ORBIS began work to establish Việt Nam’s first eye bank, which will increase the number of corneas available for transplantation. ORBIS also funded the first wet lab in the country, where ophthalmologists can practice surgical procedures on animal eyes.

ORBIS’s work in Việt Nam concentrates on: (1) Increasing access to comprehensive eye care among rural communities; (2) Building the capacity of national institutions to take the lead in blindness prevention services and the provision of ophthalmic training; and (3) Advancing pediatric ophthalmology.
