The patient, the 585th Covid-19 case in the country, had a number of underlying health conditions, including type-2 diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

On July 10, she was admitted to the Geriatric Department at Da Nang Hospital. After being discharged from hospital a week later, she showed signs of fever and was taken to the Emergency Department of the Da Nang Hospital for treatment from July 21 to 28.

As she was tired and difficult in breathing, she was then moved to the Intensive Care and Anti-poison Department.

From July 29 to August 1, she was transferred to the Department of Nephrology-Urology and then to the Department of Oncology, Da Nang Hospital. On July 31, the patient was sampled and tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

Between August 1 and 6, she was quarantined and treated at the Hoa Vang District Medical Center, initially diagnosed with pneumonia due to SARS-CoV-2 on a patient with type-2 diabetes, hypertension, septic shock and multi-organ failure.

On August 5, she showed signs of respiratory failure and vasomotor disorder, and was placed on a ventilator. A day later, the patient had to use ECMO and was taken to the Da Nang Hospital for Lung Diseases for continuous monitoring.

On August 11, doctors put her off ECMO and carried out plasma exchange. On August 12, she progressed seriously, developing septic shock, acute liver failure, acute kidney damage, a severe drop in blood pressure and irreversible vasomotor disorder. She was declared dead at 10pm the same day.

The death was diagnosed to result from pneumonia caused by Covid-19 complications, including severe respiratory failure and septic shock with multi-organ damage on a patient with type-2 diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

So far, Viet Nam has recorded 21 fatalities related to Covid-19, with the youngest at 33 and the oldest at 87, both having underlying health issues.
