PM Phuc's video message to 17th CAEXPO, CABIS

VGP - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc sent a video message to the 17th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and the China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit held in form of virtual format on November 27.

November 27, 2020 9:23 PM GMT+7

Comrade Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, President of the People’s Republic of China,

Excellencies Leaders and Heads of Delegation,

Ladies and gentlemen,

It is my great honour and pleasure, on behalf of the Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, to address the Opening Ceremony of the 17th CAEXPO and CABIS, as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN - China Free Trade Area and the ASEAN – China Year of Digital Economic Cooperation. As such, these events will drive further cooperation and boost trade and growth for both China and ASEAN member states.

Let me take this opportunity to congratulate General Secretary, President Xi Jinping - the core leader of China, and Chinese people and government upon your rapid success in addressing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and remarkable economic rebound. We are also appreciative that China has shared information and experience in fighting the pandemic and provided assistance to countries in need.

Ladies and gentlemen,

As the global economy is being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, ASEAN-China cooperation continues to see encouraging progress, especially in economic and trade interaction, and mutual support in the pandemic response. For more than 10 consecutive years, China has been ASEAN’s largest trade partner. Notably, we recently witnessed ASEAN becoming China’s largest trade partner for the first time in the first 6 months of 2020 as the trade turnover amounted to US$300bn, in which the Viet Nam-China figure accounts for 20%. Amid the fierce outbreak of COVID-19, the ASEAN-China trade ties is one of the few to sustain positive growth since the beginning of 2020.

This year, during Viet Nam’s Chairmanship and under the theme of “”Cohesive and Responsive”, ASEAN has redoubled its efforts to strengthen solidarity and unity, kept the pace of cooperation, responded effectively to the pandemic, enjoyed fruitful engagement with its partners, and reinforced its centrality in the regional security issues. Most importantly, at the 37th ASEAN Summit and related Summits held in mid-November, where China was represented by Comrade Premier Li Keqiang, ten ASEAN member states and five partners, including China, signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), creating a vast market of 2.2 billion people and $26.2 trillion in combined GDP. We can all take pride in this agreement as a strong affirmation of an open, fair, and rules-based multilateral trading system.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Viet Nam is striving to fulfil the twofold goal of curbing the pandemic and fostering economic rebound. Accordingly, we have taken measures to boost economic recovery and secure people’s livelihood, and have become party to major free trade agremeents such as CPTPP, EVFTA, and RCEP. At CAEXPO, Viet Nam has been the country with the largest number of participating businesses and exhibition stalls among ASEAN member states. This time, our virtual stalls will stay open until the end of 2020, thus offering huge trade opportunities for firms.

2020 is also an important milestone in the Viet Nam – China relations. General Secretary, President Nguyen Phu Trong and General Secretary, President Xi Jinping have held two telephone discussions where they agreed on future directions for deepening our ties of good neighborliness and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Viet Nam is joining fellow ASEAN members to realize the ASEAN Community Vision 2025,  expand mutually beneficial cooperation with our neighbour China, on the basis of the UN Charter and international law, for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and the world.

I wish the 17th China – ASEAN Expo and the China – ASEAN Business and Investment Summit every success.

I wish all participating businesses success in your endeavor.

Thank you very much./.
