Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc receives UK Ambassador to Viet Nam, Giles Lever, Ha Noi, June 6, 2018

Receiving the outgoing diplomat in Ha Noi on June 6, PM Phuc stated that the Viet Nam-UK relations have been growing extensively and effectively across diverse spheres over the past few years, with two-way trade reaching US$6.1 billion in 2017.

The UK currently ranks 15th among the 116 countries and territories investing in Viet Nam, with 317 valid projects totalling US$3.46, he said.

The PM suggested that both sides continue to build on the gained results, striving to further accelerate bilateral economic ties to meet with the strategic partnership framework and the cooperation potential between them.

He urged the two sides to work together to successfully organize the upcoming meeting of the Viet Nam-UK Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO), while asking for the UK’s continuous support via its wealth fund, especially in the fields of climate change adaptation, environment, green technology, and scientific research.

Viet Nam wishes to boost educational cooperation with the UK to improve Vietnamese students’ access to high-quality educational system, PM Phuc said, suggesting that the two countries strengthen exchange activities to enhance friendship and mutual understanding, as they celebrate 45 years of bilateral diplomatic relations in 2018.

Ambassador Giles Lever recognized Viet Nam’s significant results achieved in improving its business climate, stating that the UK Government is willing to provide technical support for Viet Nam in this field.

He expressed his delight at the cooperation outcomes between the two sides in the fields of defence, security, and response to global challenges, such as climate change and wildlife trade.

Hailing education as a priority area for bilateral cooperation, the diplomat said that his country would increase the number of scholarships for Vietnamese students.

He affirmed that the UK strongly supports the maintenance of maritime and aviation security and freedom in the East Sea, as well as the compliance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
