Portugal and Viet Nam established diplomatic relations in 1975. The two sides have maintained delegation exchanges at all levels and supported each other at multi-lateral forums, especially at the United Nations.
The two-way trade turnover increased from US$90 million in 2008 to US$370 million in 2014.
Viet Nam mainly exports coffee, aquatic, wood and footwear to Portugal.
