PM okays proposal for national flower

VGP – PM Nguyen Tan Dung has agreed with a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) regarding the selection of Viet Nam’s national flower.

March 12, 2013 6:40 PM GMT+7

PM Dung has requested that the selection should be participated by people from all walks of life.

The MCST is in charge of working with related agencies to collect public opinions and adopt types of selection.

Viet Nam is one of 16 countries in the world which are rich in biodiversity with numerous species of flowers.

The MCST hosted seminars and workshops and launched a poll across the country last year to collect public opinions on the national flower. Accordingly, 62% of respondents selected lotus as the national flower of Viet Nam.

The criteria for choosing the national flower are that national flower must have originated in Viet Nam or have been grown in the country for a long time.

Moreover, the chosen flower also must represent “Viet Nam’s cultural characteristics,” be widely referred to Vietnamese literature and depicted frequently in other works of art.

It has to be favored by many people as well./.
