PM shares new vision for Mekong Region

VGP – PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asserted that the integration of nations in the Mekong Region has made crucial contributions to consolidating the peaceful and sustainable environment in the region and effectively upheld potential and advantages of these nations as well as promoted renovation and reform, completed economic institutions and improved people’s lives.

The PM made that statement at the discussion on A New Vision for the Mekong Region on September 12 within the framework of the World Economic Forum on ASEAN 2018.

At the event, the Vietnamese leader supposed that the fourth industrial revolution has created huge opportunities to enhance integration in the Mekong Region, highlighting the importance of soft and digital connections to the economic connectivity.  

He stressed the need to use water resources effectively, connect energy, transport and human resources training, adding that the region has full potential of connecting digital infrastructure with 250 million customers. 

At the ministerial-level meetings under the WEF ASEAN, Viet Nam proposed the initiative on expanding cooperative model on mobile network with the same prices between Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Viet Nam and for the Greater Mekong Sub-region and ASEAN, heading to establish a “flat ASEAN” for the people to enjoy the best services on telecommunications, he said.  

The PM expressed his hope that the fourth industrial revolution will boost fast and effective development for all nations in the region. 

The discussion attracted the participation of Cambodian PM Hun Sen, Lao PM Thongloun Sisoulith, State Counsellor DawAung San Suu Kyi and Thai Deputy PM Prajin Juntong.

Leaders from nations in the Mekong Region referred to crucial issues related to the development and integration of nations in the region, impact of the fourth industrial revolution, digital connectivity, environment and water management.
