President arrives in U.S. for 76th session of UNGA

VGP – President Nguyen Xuan Phuc has arrived in New York, the U.S. to attend the 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) from September 21-24.

The State leader will attend the opening ceremony of the UN General Assembly’s 76th session, and the Global COVID-19 Summit themed “Ending the Pandemic and Building Back Better” which is chaired by the U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Nguyen is also expected to have bilateral meetings with foreign leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly. Particularly, he will hold dialogues with leaders of top American businesses to encourage them to promote investment activities in Viet Nam.

In 20th July 1977, by the Resolution 413 (1977) adopted at the 2025th meeting by consensus, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) recommended to the General Assembly that the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam be admitted to membership in the United Nations.

Viet Nam’s contribution to UN peacekeeping operations officially dates back in 2014, as the Southeast Asian country sent personnel to UN missions in Africa (South Sudan and the Central African Republic).

The country has sent a total of 243 officers to UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in New York, and deployed three level-2 field hospitals in South Sudan.

Viet Nam officially won the election to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2020-2021 after getting 192 votes out of the 193 member countries and territories of the UN General Assembly.
