NA convenes seventh session

The seventh session of the 13th National Assembly opened in Ha Noi on May 20 with a speech by NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.

During the session, the law-making body plans to spend the majority of its sitting time discussing and approving 11 draft laws, three resolutions and commenting on 16 other draft laws for the first time to realize the NA resolution on implementing the 2013 Constitution.

According to the resolution, laws, ordinances and legal documents which had been issued before the 2013 Constitution came into effect must be reviewed, amended, supplemented or replaced by new regulations in accordance with the new Constitution.

The session is scheduled to close on June 24.
 
VN commits to ensure safety for enterprises

The Government of Viet Nam resolutely takes all necessary measures in accordance with Viet Nam’s laws and international commitments to ensure security, safety and legitimate interests of foreign organizations, enterprises and individuals in the country.

President of the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vu Tien Loc made the statement at a meeting in Ha Noi with representatives from foreign businesses operating in Viet Nam about recent aggressive actions of several bad individuals in Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Ha Tinh provinces.

Loc said that 80-90% of affected businesses have resumed their normal operation and the local authorities have taken numerous measures to support the businesses.

The Government prohibits all acts that harm staff and property of foreign enterprises and will punish strictly rioters to make sure that no more similar incidents will happen in the future, Loc said.

VN, RoK hold 5th round talks for bilateral FTA
 
The Republic of Korea (RoK) and Viet Nam began the fifth round of negotiations for their free trade agreement (FTA) in Seoul.
 
 During this round, both sides will have an in-depth discussion on such areas as commodities, services, investment, the country of origin,  customs procedures, and cooperation.

The RoK Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) said that once the trade pact is signed, Viet Nam will become a major partner of trade and investment of the RoK.

Viet Nam and the RoK launched FTA negotiations in November 2012, and they both aim to end negotiations late this year.

DongA Bank receives Bank of Mellon’s award
 
Bank of New York Mellon (BNY Mellon) has recently presented its prestigious ‘Excellence Straight Through Processing (STP) Award for 2013’ to DongA Bank.
 
 The system named – Straight Through Processing (STP) – allows transactions to be completed electronically without the need for re-keying or manual intervention.

Last year, STP between the two banks reached more than 98 percent of total payments.

The STP Award, granted every year by BNYMellon, acknowledges outstanding performance with respect to payment processing.

$237 billion in FDI poured into VN

By April 2014, Viet Nam had 16,323 valid foreign-invested projects, with a total registered capital of $237 billion, according to Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Dang Huy Dong.

Foreign investments have contributed to promoting technology innovation, improving production capacity and economic management in Viet Nam, developing high-quality human resources while generating more jobs.

Dong, however, noted that Viet Nam should actively work to better its legal system on investment and business, especially simplifying administrative procedures in the fields, in order to draw more foreign investment in the coming time.

In the first four months of this year, the country attracted $4.855 billion in foreign direct investment. Capital disbursement by foreign-invested projects reached about $4 billion in reviewed period, representing a year-on-year increase of 6.7 percent.

Pakistan remains VN’s largest tea importer
 
Pakistan has become VN’s most prolific tea importer in recent years with an average turnover reaching over US$40 million per year, accounting for more than 20% of Viet Nam’s total tea export volume.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), Vietnam earnedUS$13 million from exporting approximately 8,000 tonnes of tea in April,, bringing total export tea volume to 33,000 tonnes, valued at US$51 million in the first four months of this year.

The average export price of Vietnamese tea stood at US$1.541 per tonne in the first quarter of 2014, up, 2.49% against the same period last year.

France helps VN develop renewable energy
 
French enterprises will provide Viet Nam with the latest information on renewable energy development, the application of new technologies, the ability to transfer technology, and financial support.

French Ambassador to Viet Nam Jean Noel made the commitment at a conference in Ha Noi stressing that renewable energy is one of France’s priority cooperation areas for Viet Nam.

“Energy cooperation is a key pillar in the Viet Nam-France strategic partnership, and this area is expected to make great strides this year,” said the diplomat.
 
Scientific symposium on VN held in Moscow
 
The Institute for Far Eastern Studies (IFES) under the Russian Academy of Sciences is holding a scientific symposium on Viet Nam in Moscow.
 
Opening the symposium, IFES Director Mikhail Titarenko said that this year’s event, the fifth of its kind, focuses on the main theme of “important anniversaries during 2014-15 in Viet Nam’s history”.

During the two-day symposium, delegates heard reports on Viet Nam’s political, social and cultural issues, its relationship with other countries as well as its language and literature.
 
VN, Australia reinforce people-to-people friendship

The Viet Nam-Australia Friendship Association and the Australia-Viet Nam Friendship Association are willing to boost their relations and believe that their intensified ties will benefit both countries.

This was included in a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between the two organisations signed in Ha Noi.
 
The document also mentions the promotion of exchanges in the fields of education and culture, people-to-people diplomacy, and humanitarian aid for Agent Orange (AO)/Dioxin victims.

Addressing the signing ceremony, Chairman of the Australia-Viet Nam association Kim Sampson emphasised the need to continue humanitarian assistance for Vietnamese AO victims as they are day and night struggling against serious diseases as consequences of the toxic chemical.
