The regulation is part of the new decree recently issued by the Government on the import of fishing vessels.

The decree requires imported fishing boats to meet safety criteria for themselves and crew members, and to comply with requirements on environment protection under Việt Nam’s laws and international treaties which the country has signed or accessed.

In addition, owners have to register their fishing vessels, the number of crew members and apply for fishing certificates.

Generally, imported fishing vessels must have legal origins, major engines of over 400 CV, fishing and storage equipment.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development decides to import fishing vessels sponsored by overseas governments, organizations and individuals, those belonging to joint ventures between Vietnamese and foreign partners, those for fisheries patrols, and for surveying and exploring marine potentials.

The decree will take effect since August 1, 2010./.
