The figure showed an increase of 12% against the same period last year, raising the total rice export in the first five months to 2.5 million tons.
With a sharp increase in export volume in recent months, Vietnam is expected to achieve its set target of 6.5 million tons by the end of 2012.
In a bid to establish Vietnamese rice trademark, the Government planed to increase the percentage of high-quality rice accounting to 60-70%.
This year, China is emerging as Vietnam’s biggest rice importer with the export value increasing by 4.4 times against the same period last year.
Local rice exporters are now trying to penetrate into other markets such as Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana and Senegal.
