Rice exports soar by 1.2 percent in January-April

VGP – Viet Nam exported 700,000 tons of rice worth US$362 million in April 2021, bringing the total volume in the first four months of the year to 1.9 million tons.

In the Jan.-Apr. period, the export volume fell by 10.8 percent to US$1.01 billion but increased by 1.2% in value compared to the same period last year.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the export prices of Vietnamese rice dropped to US$488 per ton in late April from US$508 per ton at the beginning of the month.

In the first quarter, the Philippines was the largest importer of Vietnamese rice with a market share of 36.3 percent, importing 411,580 tons worth US$219.96 million, down 30.7 percent in volume and down 14.5 percent in value year-on-year.

Viet Nam reported a 2.7-fold increase in its rice export turnover with Ivory Coast and a surge of 66 percent with Australia.

Meanwhile, the country saw a significant decline in its rice exports to Mozambique (down 53.5 percent). The average price of rice for exports in the Jan-Mar period reached US$547.8 per ton, rising 18.6 percent compared with the same period in 2020.

The export value of white rice accounted for 39.3 percent of Viet Nam’s total rice export revenue in the opening quarter of the year, followed by Jasmine rice and fragrant rice (36 percent), glutinous rice (22 percent), Japonica rice and rice of Japanese varieties (2.6 percent), and other types (0.1 percent).

The largest importers of Vietnamese white rice were the Philippines (63.1 percent), Cuba (12.6 percent) and Malaysia (5.7 percent), while Jasmine rice and fragrant rice were mainly exported to the Philippines (21.9 percent), Ghana (19.8 percent) and Ivory Coast (16.8 percent). China, Malaysia and the Philippines were the three biggest consumers of Vietnamese glutinous rice with 82.5 percent, 6.7% and 4.3 percent, respectively.

As for Japonica rice and rice of Japanese varieties, the major importers included Solomon Islands (11.8 percent), Cambodia (11.8 percent) and Saudi Arabia (8.7 percent).

The ministry said unfavorable weather conditions are forecast in many parts of the world this year, causing food production to decrease in many countries and triggering a surging demand for rice imports.

It also said the European market is expected to get more dynamic as the EU-Viet Nam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) comes into effect, and Viet Nam is an important rice trading partner of the EU bloc.
