RoK’s firm to open direct VN-US shipping route

VGP – The Republic of Korea’s (RoK) shipping firm Hanjin said it will launch a direct shipping route linking Southeast Asia and Japan to the US West Coast. The ships operating along this route can drop at the newly-opened deep-water port of Tân Cảng-Cái Mép in the southern province of Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu.

June 19, 2009 7:21 PM GMT+7

Hanjin said it is targeting Việt Nam and other Southeast Asian markets because they posted stable growth rates despite impacts of the global economic recession.

The shipping firm will use six 4,000 TEU vessels which go through ports in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Japan to Long Beach and Oakland in the US.

From July 7 on, the ships will stop at the Tân Cảng-Cái Mép Port, instead of transiting in Hong Kong, to load cargos.

Earlier, Singapore-based container shipping firm APL and Japanese MOL had launched direct container shipping services between Việt Nam and the US via the ports of SP-PSA and Tân Cảng-Cái Mép.

In May, Hanjin announced the opening of a direct route between Busan City and Việt Nam’s northern city of Hải Phòng to transport Vietnamese goods to the US through ports of China and the RoK, 2-3 days faster than before.
