Nearly 400 businesses, including 90 big Vietnamese ones, attended the biggest Business and Investment Promoting Forum between Vietnam and Yunnan Province. According to the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Vietnam is now the biggest partner of Yunnan Province, with a two-way turnover of US$ 500 million in 2006. The 44-million-people province is not only a potential market but also a gateway for Vietnamese commodities to enter the mainland and the western part of China. Moreover, Yunnan functions as a focal point in the economic corridors Kunming-Hanoi-Hải Phòng and the free trade area ASEAN-China.

Addressing the business community of the two countries, State President Nguyễn Minh Triết asked them to make use of advantages in order to increase trade and investment turnover between the two sides. They should also prioritize the healthy development of border trade. The President confirmed that Vietnam highly appreciates the cooperation with Chinese enterprises.

Yunnan Governor Qin Guangrong emphasized that the visit to China by President Nguyễn Minh Triết is likely to expand economic cooperation and other bilateral ties. He added that Yunnan is willing to observe targets put forward by senior leaders of the two countries in order to increase the bilateral trade turnover from US$10 billion to US$15 billion by 2010.
