The participation of the Vietnamese State President presents the national determination to realize its diplomatic policies of openness, diversification and multilateralism.

The visit also underlines the commitments of high-ranking Vietnamese leaders to making positive, constructive and responsible contributions to the operations of the UNSC and the UN for common benefits.

Over the last time, Việt Nam has recorded numerous achievements in responding and mitigating negative impacts of the global economic and financial turmoil while the country’s prestige and position have been significantly upgraded on the international arena.

In addition, the international community has long praised Việt Nam for its efforts to join and fulfill commitments under major multinational treaties on disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Both UN member states and the UN Secretary-General have highly spoke of Việt Nam’s constructive contributions to the UN, as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for the 2008-2009 term, to the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and ‘One UN Initiative’ at home.

During his stay in New York, State President Nguyễn Minh Triết plans to meet leaders of other delegations and the UN.
