State President meets foreign leaders, WB President on sidelines of UNGA 76

VGP – Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc had bilateral meetings with foreign leaders and the World Bank Group (WB) President on September 21 on the sidelines of the General Debate of the UN General Assembly’s 76th session (UNGA 76).

At his meeting with President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea Nguyen suggested the RoK side continue expanding FDI projects and enhancing technology transfer for Viet Nam, affirming that Viet Nam will continue facilitating Korean companies to do business in the Southeast Asian country.

Korean President Moon expressed his hope to lift two-way trade to US$100 billion by 2023 and announced that the RoK will donate more than 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine which will be delivered by mid-October to Viet Nam

During the meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, Nguyen asked Ireland to soon ratify the EU-Viet Nam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and maintain the provision of official development assistance to Viet Nam in the coming time.

He also asked Ireland to support Viet Nam to get access to COVID-19 vaccine supply and consider providing medical supplies, such as ventilators and testing kits for Viet Nam.

Nguyen proposed Denmark assist Viet Nam in accessing vaccine supplies, including via the COVAX Facility while meeting with Danish PM Mette Frederiksen. 

The two leaders said they are pleased to see the development of the two-way trade and the fulfillment of goals set in the Viet Nam-Denmark Action Plan for 2019 – 2020. The two sides are actively formulating an action plan for 2021 – 2022.

Frederiksen pledged to encourage more Danish enterprises to invest in Viet Nam in the fields of maritime transport, seaport construction, shipbuilding, manufacturing of energy equipment, renewable energy, green technologies, sustainable husbandry and fisheries, green transformation, and climate change.

At the meeting with President of Slovenia Borut Pahour, the Vietnamese President suggested the two countries soon organize the third session of the Intergovernmental Slovenian–Vietnamese Commission for cooperation in economic-trade and science-technology to discuss cooperation orientations in machinery mechanics, automatism, logistics, food processing and port operations.

The two leaders discussed the transfer of technology for the production of COVID-19 treatment drug for Viet Nam. They recommended the two sides negotiate to recognize each other’s COVID-19 vaccination certificate and passport, paving the way for the travel of their citizens when international air routes resume.

The Vietnamese President urged Slovenia, as rotating President of the Council of the EU, to support and promote the removal of the “yellow card” imposed on Viet Nam's aquatic products.

The same day, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc also met with leaders from Dominica, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Latvia, Sweden, Guyana, Lesotho, Costa Rica, Colombia and Uruguay.

The Vietnamese President and the countries’ leaders reiterated that peace, stability, maritime security and freedom of navigation in the East Sea are of mutual concern, and underlined that disputes should be resolved by peaceful measures in tandem with international law.

During the meeting with the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, the Vietnamese leader suggested both sides enhance cooperation in developing renewable energy, improving climate change adaptation, and managing trans-boundary water resources via bilateral and multilateral mechanisms.

John Kerry affirmed that the U.S. continues to attach importance to the comprehensive partnership with Viet Nam, asserting the US’ determination and efforts to continue strengthening cooperation with and assisting developing countries, including Viet Nam, to cope with this global issue.

Nguyen expressed thanks to the World Bank for providing US$6.2 million in non-refundable aid for Viet Nam last year.

He asked the WB to continue policy recommendations on economic recovery, help Viet Nam access and buy COVID-19 vaccines, receive vaccine production technology, and manufacture vaccines in the country.

The WB Group President underscored that the WB will coordinate with Viet Nam in the COVID-19 fight and help the country realize the goal of becoming a developed and high-income nation by 2045.
