UN Security Council highly appreciates VN's initiative

VGP - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) included Việt Nam’s initiative of holding an international conference on nuclear power for peaceful purposes in a resolution approved at its recent summit, Deputy PM, FM Phạm Gia Khiêm told reporters.

The Deputy PM said the initiative reflects the common interest of all nations, especially the non-aligned movement members and developing countries, in the peaceful use of nuclear energy and technology amid the current energy crisis, so it is highly appreciated by the UNSC’s members and non-members.

At the meeting, the UNSC members approved a resolution which confirms three pillars: nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and the right to use nuclear technology and energy for peaceful purposes.

As a non-permanent member of the Council, Việt Nam actively participated in the preparations and discussions at the Summit, especially proposing the initiative to organize an international conference on the peaceful use of nuclear power.

Deputy PM Khiêm confirmed that the country always wants to make active contributions to peace, cooperation and development in the world, and its consistent policy is to oppose arms race while supporting strengthened multilateral cooperation, especially the role of the United Nations in dealing with the current global issues.

Vietnamese State President Nguyễn Minh Triết’s presence at the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly indicated Việt Nam’s commitments to the international community’s common concerns.

During his speech at the event, the State President presented Việt Nam’s viewpoints about the current global challenges and orientations to deal with them via fostering multilateral cooperation and renewing the United Nations.

Regarding development, Việt Nam has always been regarded by the United Nations and other countries as a typical example with consistent policies, active cooperation and significant contributions.

After over 20 years of renovation, the country has reaped many important socio-economic achievements highly appreciated by the international community. Its initial successes in overcoming the economic crisis are helping Việt Nam realize the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

The model “One United Nations” applied in Việt Nam is proving fruitful, contributing to the organization’s reform.

The Deputy PM said the working trip of the State President and the Vietnamese delegation to the 64th UN General Assembly session is a great success, helping to raise the image and status of Việt Nam in the world.
