UN’s senior official hails VN’s efforts for peace and economic development

In her meeting with State President Nguyễn Minh Triết this morning, Mrs. Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile, applauded Việt Nam’s great efforts to promote peace and economic development as well as improving women and children’s social status and rights.

She underlined that she decided to choose Việt Nam to make the first tour after her appointment to the UN Women’s chief because she wanted to learn about the country’s achievements in safeguarding social security and gender equality, then popularizing them worldwide.

The guest pledged to help Việt Nam fruitfully realize its social security policies.

For his part, the Vietnamese State President attributed Việt Nam’s achievements to the UN’s support.

Việt Nam always pays attention to social well-being and gender equality, the two fields Mrs. Michelle Bachelet takes charge, said Mr. Triết, expressing his hope that the guest would further help Việt Nam in these fields.

President Triết took the occasion to congratulate the Government and people of Chile for their recent successful rescue of 33 miners.

He also expected that Việt Nam and Chile could early sign a Free Trade Agreement for stronger economic relations.

The same day, Deputy FM Phạm Bình Minh received Mrs. Bachelet and asked her to assist Việt Nam in gender equality, women’s empowerment and social protection.
