Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry Le Thi Thu Hang: Viet Nam has gained important human rights achievements acknowledged and appreciated by the international community

Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang made the above remarks on Thursday in response to reporters’ question about Viet Nam’s reaction to the Country Report on Human Rights Practices for 2018 of the US Department of State.

The fundamental rights of the Vietnamese citizens are clearly stated in the country’s Constitution and laws in accordance with the international conventions on human rights to which Viet Nam is a signatory and these rights have been respected and ensured in practice, Hang said.

Thanks to its efforts, Viet Nam has gained important human rights achievements acknowledged and appreciated by the international community, she added.

Last year, the country’s per capita income increased to US$ 2,587 or up US$ 198 from 2017 while poverty rate dipped by 1.35% to 5.35% from the previous year.

The social insurance coverage rose by 2.31% to 87.7% in 2018 and 70% of the country’s population are internet users.

It is estimated that around 8,500 religious festivals are organized each year.

The Spokesperson affirmed Viet Nam stands ready to discuss with the US side on relevant issues of common concerns in a frank and open manner in order to strengthen mutual understanding and to foster the two countries’ comprehensive partnership.
