U.S. Secretary of State extends condolences over flooding in Central VN

VGP – The Government of the U.S. expresses its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Viet Nam as they mourn those who perished due to significant flooding in the central region of Viet Nam as a result of Tropical Storm Linfa, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement released Friday.

October 24, 2020 2:07 PM GMT+7

“The U.S. government stands ready to assist Viet Nam in addressing the damage caused by the floods, and we send our deepest sympathies to all affected by this tragedy, including the many thousands who were displaced”, read the statement.

Earlier on October 17, U.S. Ambassador to Viet Nam Daniel J. Kritenbrink announced an initial US$100,000 in disaster relief funds for Viet Nam to address the immediate humanitarian needs of vulnerable communities in areas most affected by Tropical Storm Linfa.

These funds will be provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to the Viet Nam Red Cross Society (VNRC).

Floods caused by heavy rains have claimed 111 lives in 12 localities of central and central highlands regions, according to the Central Steering Committee for National Disaster Prevention and Control.

The Committee also said 22 others are still missing while nearly 124,570 houses were submerged in floodwaters in Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces.
