The agreement was signed in October, 2013 between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Vietnamese Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit (EAS) in Brunei.

In February 2014, the document was ratified by US President Barack Obama. It now has to wait for the  Senate's endorsement.

The agreement allows US companies to enter in Viet Nam’s expanding market for nuclear power.

According to the US Department of Commerce, the agreement is expected to help the US pocket US$10-20 billion in export revenue and generate 50,000 high-paid jobs.

Viet Nam’s nuclear power market was said the second biggest in East Asia, only after China, and is expected to earn US$50 billion in revenue in the next two decades.

Nuclear power would meet over 10% of domestic demand by 2030.

Earlier, Russia and Japan had reached similar deals with Viet Nam./.
